Refurbishment of Clunie–Coupar Angus 132kV Overhead Line

Project Brief

LSTC was instructed by NorPower to complete 38km of tower line refurbishment on behalf of SSEN in Perthshire. The project involved the replacement of the existing 175mm2 ACSR Lynx conductors with 300 square millimetre AAAC Upas.

Our Approach

LSTC assessed the structural suitability of the existing tower line for the proposed new conductor system.

This included the design of strengthened steelwork members and foundation upgrade requirements and all associated drawings to enable the construction stage to commence.

Challenges

The main challenge of this project was the strengthening of tower legs and foundation upgrades on a tower at a high altitude and the temporary arrangements associated with the works. In addition, the tower was in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Project Outcome / Deliverables

  • Full refurbishment of the line was completed in November 2016.
  • Completed on time and within budget under very tight time scales.
